One thing that we know is true - it is easier to add heat than take it away. Here are some quick tips on cooling your greenhouse.
1. Shade Cloth
- Shade cloth is the first and easiest recommendation. There are many types including shade sail or, typical nylon material. Consider repurposing household items like sheets or bamboo blinds.
2. Natural Shade
- Plant a tree to provide some natural shade cover. If you can find a sturdy variety that gains leaves in May and drops leaves for winter, you would have the best of both worlds because the greenhouse will get more light in winter when it needs it. Alternatively train vines to grow up a lattice or trellis on the south (or hottest) side of the greenhouse in the hottest months. There are great pollinating plants that could benefit your local wildlife too. A bit of research or talking to your local nursery is a good step.
3. Exhaust Fans
- Exhaust fan systems and evaporative coolers are mechanical options that move hot air out of the greenhouse.
4. Cool with Water
- Many of our customers spray down the greenhouse floor to keep it cool every morning.
5. Place Plants on the ground.
- Move your plants to ground level where it is naturally cooler. Prop the door open and make sure you have circulating fans moving the hot air.
6. Consider Introducing Cooling Equipment
- Exhaust fans will swap out hot air, evaporative coolers (also called swamp coolers) will add cooler air.
